ACCOUNTABILITY

You should be able to see where the money goes.

MDCommunity is an independent non-profit. We are committed to being straightforward about the funds we receive, how we spend them, and what they make possible.

OUR PROMISE

Clear information, without the small print.

As we receive and spend money, we will publish a clear breakdown of where it comes from and where it goes. We will explain our spending in everyday language, not hide it in hard-to-read reports.

Our policies and financial controls are in place to help us handle money, information, safeguarding, and concerns responsibly. We review how we work as the organisation grows and will share meaningful updates openly.

HOW WE STAY ACCOUNTABLE

01

People before process

We will consider the effect of decisions on people living with muscular dystrophy, families, carers, and volunteers, not just what is administratively convenient.

02

Lived experience in the room

We will make space for people with direct experience to inform our priorities, challenge our assumptions, and help evaluate our work.

03

Care with resources

We will use money, time, and information responsibly, record decisions appropriately, and explain how resources are used.

04

Honesty about limits

We will be clear about what we can offer, where we need specialist advice, and when another organisation is better placed to help.

OUR SPENDING BREAKDOWN

This is what we will show you.

Money in

The funds we receive, including donations, grants, fundraising, and other income.

Money out

A clear breakdown of what we spend, including direct community activity, administration, and the costs of running the organisation.

What it supports

Plain-language updates showing how spending connects to the work, sessions, and opportunities we are developing.

Our progress

Regular updates on what we have achieved, what we have learned, and what we plan to do next.

SAFEGUARDING AND CONCERNS

Speaking up matters.

If you have a concern about our conduct, the way someone has been treated, or how we are operating, please tell us. We take every concern seriously and will handle it respectfully and in confidence.

How to raise a concern. Email [email protected] with as much detail as you’re comfortable sharing. As we grow, we will appoint a named designated safeguarding lead and publish more detailed procedures — for now, every concern raised this way reaches the founding team directly.

If someone is in immediate danger, please contact emergency services on 999 first. For a non-emergency concern about the safety of a child or vulnerable adult, you can also contact the person’s local authority safeguarding team, or the police on 101.

What happens next. We will acknowledge your concern, look into it, and let you know what we’ve done, keeping details confidential and sharing them only with people who need to know to address it. If you are not satisfied with how a concern has been handled, you can ask for it to be reviewed by another member of the team.

Staff and volunteers who work directly with the people we support undergo DBS (criminal record) checks appropriate to their role.
